Zygote Intrafallopian Tube Transfer (ZIFT)
Zygote intrafallopian tube transfer (ZIFT) is a cross between in vitro fertilization and gamete intrafallopian tube transfer (GIFT). ZIFT requires that the woman have at least one functioning fallopian tube. ZIFT differs from GIFT in that instead of transferring a raw egg and sperm into the uterus, the egg and sperm are fertilized in a petri dish but not cultured into embryos. The fertilized egg and sperm are transferred into the fallopian tubes in the undivided state, which is the zygote, as opposed to the gamete, which is the raw egg and sperm, and the embryo, which is the egg and sperm beginning to divide into cells.
