On the first visit, we may ask that some laboratory studies be started, including a Pap test, to rule out cervical cancer and we may culture cervical secretions. Women with a history of irregular or absent menstrual cycles may be asked to have a blood test for LH and FSH levels to check for hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Other studies may include specialized blood tests to determine hormonal profiles on each partner.
