Lots of anecdotes from patients. Excellent overview of religious and moral considerations of various treatments.

This book presents easy-to-understand explanations of a range of fertility diagnoses and treatments, as well as some patient-directed methods to improve fertility. Though it does not give detailed information (such as specific hormone levels which indicate a problem or exactly HOW drug therapies interact with the endocrine system), it does provide a comprehensive overview. Much attention given to diet and fitness.

How to Get Pregnant with the New Technology, by Sherman J. Silber, M.D. Published by Warner Books, ISBN 0-446-39322-3. Everything you never thought you'd need to know about the human reproductive process---until you discovered a fertility problem. Very comprehensive explanations of what could be wrong on both the male and female sides of the equation. Also, excellent explanations of Assisted Reproduction Techniques (ARTs---IVF, ZIFT, GIFT), though written before ICSI breakthrough technology. Heavily slanted toward moving directly to ART procedures and bypassing lengthy diagnostic testing and low tech treatments.

The Infertility Book: A Comprehensive Medical and Emotional Guide, by Carla Harkness. Published by Celestial Arts, ISBN 0-89087-664-9. Will It Hurt the Baby? The Safe Use of Medications During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding, by Richard S. Abrams, M.D. Published by Addison Wesley, ISBN 0-201-51809-0. While not a book considered particularly relevant to infertility treatment, this book is invaluable for those in treatment who wonder what medications might have an impact during those most vulnerable first weeks of pregnancy. Contains clear explanations of ramifications of use for hundreds of prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as FDA pregnancy risk categories.

A Woman Doctor's Guide to Infertility, by Susan Treiser, M.D., Ph.D., with Susan K. Levinson. Published by Hyperion, ISBN 0-7868-8010-4. This book is a simple, easy-to-understand introduction to the world of infertility diagnosis and treatment, with clear descriptions of important tests and treatment options. It debunks many infertility myths, and pays special attention to the importance of culling through the "facts" presented by treatment facilities so the couple can make an educated decision about which clinic or practice is most qualified to meet their needs.

In Pursuit of Fertility, by Robert Franklin, M.D., and Dorothy Kay Brockman. Published by Henry Holt and Company, Inc., ISBN 0-8050-4181-8. This book is a clearly-written, easy-to-follow book that covers the full spectrum of family-building for the infertile couple---from balancing hormones to surrogacy to adoption. Notably, this book also contains extremely comprehensive sections on the reproductive challenges of women suffering from Endometriosis and histories of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). If you know a young woman who is suffering from either of these, buy her In Pursuit of Fertility now, even if she isn't planning to start a family for some time. The information in this book just may guide her to the care she needs to preserve her ability to have children.

Dr. Richard Marrs' Fertility Book, by Richard Marrs, M.D., Lisa Friedman Bloch and Kathy Kirtland Silverman. Published by Delacorte Press, ISBN 0-385-31436-1. The conversational tone of this book is misleading---the reader suddenly finds him/herself in the midst of an extremely technical explanation that is virtually painless! An excellent overview of all aspects of infertility, from acknowledging that there is a problem to finding competent care, to getting through the diagnosis and deciding on a treatment plan. The book advocates being a partner in your treatment plan, not just the subject of the treatment plan, and clearly explains details of misleading studies and media stories. "Pull Quotes" are used effectively to highlight important information and insights in each section. A welcome addition to the infertility bookshelf.
